Danube Winemakers is a regional association of 20 wineries located in the western and central parts of the PGI Danube Plain in northern Bulgaria. The region borders Serbia to the west and the Danube River and Romania to the north. It features a temperate continental climate and an average elevation of 178 meters, with peaks exceeding 500 meters. A notable member of the association is the Institute of Viticulture and Enology in Pleven – the fifth oldest scientific research institution dedicated to vine and wine in the world.
Bononia Estate
Bononia Estate is named after an ancient Roman fortress called Bononia (present day Vidin), situated on the Danube River. It’s family-owned and was founded in 2013 in the renovated building of one of Bulgaria’s oldest breweries. Bononia Estate cultivates approximately 170 hectares on black chernozem soils with high carbonate content over deep loess deposits.
Burgozone
As Bulgaria’s only vegan-certified winery, the family estate of Burgozone crafts wines from hand-harvested grapes grown in our own vineyards – capturing the true character of our unique terroir. We cultivate a diverse range of varieties, from authentic indigenous grapes like the aromatic Tamyanka and vibrant Gamza, to pioneering plantings in the Danubian region such as Viognier and Marselan, alongside classic varietals.
Gorun Winery
Boutique and family-run, Gorun is a winery with a mission, a winery with a vision. Vineyards were planted in 2016 on windy, hilly land near the town of Iskar, 30km from Pleven on the leached chernozem soils, rich in micronutrients, typical of the Danube plain. The winery launched in 2019, named for the centuries-old oaks or Gorun that grow nearby.
Tipchenitza Winery
Tipchenitza Winery is named after the picturesque village of Tipchenitsa and nestles in the rolling hills of northwestern Bulgaria, in the western part of the Danube Plain. The region boasts centuries-old traditions in the production of vine planting material as well as some of the country’s finest grapes.
